dada collaboration I

Into the clearing she ran, panting, the howl at her heels.
"Tang? Like the astronauts?"
"So, you see," Sheila proclaimed, "that is why I chose violet for the
bedroom."
"Lettuce or onions, but not both at once. That gives me gas."
The bell rang once, twice, then stopped.
And then Christmas passed. She forgave everyone except the old one with bad shoes.

The desk clerk seemed sleepy, or drugged.
Well, that sounded familiar, Shelly thought, in a very 1960s British-mod
way.
"Louise just shut her mouth then. I mean, really - what could she possibly
have to say to that woman after what she did?"
When the shiny little tin animal fell off the shelf, Lance felt the sound in
his veins.
"I felt like Mr. Bojangles except without the dog and stone cold sober."
"Lick it, stamp it, and throw it in the mail."

among the gardeners

From The Four-Gated City by Doris Lessing:

" ... and it was among the gardeners, so the stories went, that could be found, if only one could recognise them, most of the people who protected and fed the city."

Bradbury

From Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury:

"Ours is a culture and a time [as] immensely rich in trash as it is in treasures. Sometimes it is a little hard to tell the trash from the treasure, so we hold back, afraid to declare ourselves. But since we are out to give ourselves texture, to collect truths on many levels, and in many ways, to test ourselves against life, and the truths of others, [texture] offered us in comic strips, TV shows, books, magazines, newspapers, plays, and films, we should not fear to be seen in strange companies."

As good an excuse as any for my strange obsession with "Law and Order."

Been in some strange company lately?

storm stories

Nothing Deren tried could keep Doodle-doo from bouncing off the walls in a thunderstorm. No flower remedies, no soft words or calming strokes. The dog simply lost her mind when it thundered.

Got a storm story?

three haikus

Bricks like tumbled stone
and in the garden blooming
gossamer blankets.

Her song to the rain
echoing off the granite
buttons of blue sway.

In the grasses tall
from the darkening fog leapt
the scent of lilacs.

There was something about the way she looked ...

at the goldfish swimming in and around the tiny castle that made Jerry wonder if she was a little off or just profoundly interested in carp.

How would you finish the sentence?

January in July

From The Andy Warhol Diaries:

Thursday, January 19, 1978 Went to the auction of Joan Crawford's costume jewelry. Saw PH there bidding on a huge pink necklasce and when it went over her limit she dropped out, but then I bid some more and got it and gave it to her. She was so grateful she took me down to the Village to Sixth Avenue near Waverly and showed me a secret store she'd discovererd on the second floor where a man sells the Diors and Balenciagas that belonged to his sister who's now dead.

Some people have all the luck ...

if someone said make a wish ...

If someone said make a wish, she would wish for Marcia Klein to get a big ol' zit right in the middle of her nasty face. She pictured a giant pustulent blemish smack dab on the end of that bitch's nose.

If someone said make a wish, she would wish for there to not be any place on her body that itched. No allergic reactions to detergents, no scaly wrists or bumpy heels. No waking up in the morning with dried blood under her fingernails from scratching in the night.

If someone said make a wish, she would tell people world peace, but she really wished for lots of money.

Brave New World

"Words can be lik X-rays, if you use them properly -- they'll go through anything. You read and you're pierced."
